Jordan: tension regarding the high salaries, huge bonuses and board of directors’memberships


A state of anger is prevailing the social media in Jordan regarding the high salaries and huge bonuses enjoyed by a number of employees and some workers, who have been appointed by counselors, in addition to the procurement of services and the membership of the boards of directors of various companies and institutions to senior officials, despite the decision to set the maximum wage to 3500 by the previous government (Mulki’s government).

Numerous posts and tweets highlighted that the Razzaz government is facing a serious challenge regarding this chaos, as dozens of labor protests take place to ask for the increase of their wages, bonuses, benefits and incentives, as well as the anger of large segments of workers and retirees, particularly those with very limited salaries, whose salaries disappear within days due to inflation, high costs, and difficult living conditions.

Activists on Twitter and Facebook also leaked some information about some lucky workers of high salaries, ranging from 5 000 to 20 000 dinars per month in a stormy economic crisis, in light of the high inflation and indebtedness of people (70 percent of their income).

While the salaries of nearly two thirds of wage earners in Jordan are less than 500 dinars per month, many high-ranking employees work in the same establishments receive very high salaries, which increases the levels of social discrepancy.

The figures also reveal a large difference between the salaries of state employees who have been appointed in the civil service system and their counterparts in other types of institutions (such as contracts of procurement of services, consultants… etc.) in a clear chaos, in favor of managers, favoritism and relations.

In addition, the social networks revealed the problem of discrepancy between the salaries of old and new workers. The "old" employees do not receive a decent salary for their working tens of years. In addition, some senior employees have exploited their position to increase their privileges, either in bonuses or basic wages, while other workers who precede them with one rank do not enjoy this.

In light of this chaos regarding the decisions of salaries and bonuses, and the procurement of services and counselors the huge difference in wages between the government departments and the independent and development institutions continue, in addition to other privileges such as housing and transfer allowances, through contracts and away from the Civil Service Bureau.

Some economists affirm that the differences in salaries in the current situation in Jordan is contrary to the basic administrative regulations at the international level, and that Jordan is the first country to do so which contributes to the psychological destruction of employees in some departments as their counterparts with the same certificates and experience earn salaries much higher than theirs due to favoritism, which led to the launching of protests and their repercussions on the work and the implementation of bureaucracy.
