Mosques’ agents and workers affiliated to the General Federation of Religious Affairs, under the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) gathered on Monday in front of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in the Casbah to ask for better living conditions.
Al Chaab newspaper reported that the protesters‘demands are about reorganizing the sector, setting a basic law for the mosques’ executives and giving the workers social rights they are deprived of, such as annual leave and sick leave.
The Federation issued a statement in which it announced that the religious sector is witnessing a rebellion to defend itself and that the protest came to reject the marginalization they suffer from and recover their dignity.
The federation denounced the silence of the authorities despite all the effort s the mosques’ agents are doing to combat extremist religious speech.
