As part of the cooperation between the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC), the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the Second Arab Trade Union Conference on Climate and Just Transition was officially opened in the capital, Amman, with the participation of 35 representatives from trade union federations across the Arab region.
The opening session was led by Sister Hind Ben Ammar, Executive Secretary of the Arab Trade Union Confederation, who presented the conference agenda, focusing on preparations for the participation of Arab trade unions in the upcoming UN Climate Conference (COP) to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In her remarks, Sister Hind Ben Ammar highlighted the essential role of labor movements in achieving a just transition to a low-carbon economy. She emphasized that:
“We can solve the climate crisis and the social crisis—marked by record levels of inequality and public distrust—but doing so requires a renewed commitment to shared prosperity and a break from economic models that fail both people and the planet.”
