On October 22–23, 2024, the Jordanian capital, Amman, hosted the annual meeting of the Arab Trade Union Media Network, with the participation of all representatives of trade union organizations affiliated with the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC).
The first day was dedicated to evaluating the effectiveness of Arab trade union media and the challenges it faces, in addition to showcasing successful experiences in this field. Participants discussed the key obstacles confronting trade union media amid rapid and diverse technological developments, as well as limited human and financial resources. Media experiences were presented by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions, and the General Federation of Workers in the Sultanate of Oman.
On the second day, a number of experts and specialists delivered training sessions on communication strategy development, media planning, campaign management, short-form video production, and essential principles of cyber safety.
The forum concluded with the renewal of the Arab Trade Union Media Network membership, the adoption of ATUC’s annual communication plan, and the issuance of the following recommendations:
• Hold a meeting in December to assess the training needs of media departments within member trade unions.
• Mandate the ATUC Executive Secretariat to propose a training program for journalists and media professionals during 2025.
• Adopt Arabic as an official working language within the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
• Strengthen the contribution of Arab journalists and media professionals to ITUC’s media content.
• Enhance cooperation with the ATUC Executive Secretariat in media work and in monitoring violations of trade union rights and freedoms across the Arab region.
• Launch an annual campaign on May 3, coinciding with World Press Freedom Day, to highlight the state of press freedom in the Arab region.
