Oujda: Urban Transport Workers Go on Strike February 5–6 to Protest Labor Rights Violations
Urban transport workers in Oujda, Morocco launched a two-day strike on Wednesday and Thursday, February 5–6, 2025, to protest against ongoing violations of their labor rights by the company contracted to manage public transportation in the city.
The strike, organized by union branches affiliated with the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), comes in response to what workers describe as the company’s systematic failure to pay wages on time, non-declaration to the national social security fund, and violation of collective agreements and service standards.
According to union sources, the company continues to ignore basic legal obligations, leaving workers without access to health coverage, social insurance, or financial stability. Moreover, the company is accused of breaching the terms of its contract with the local municipality, which has negatively impacted not only workers’ conditions but also the quality of public transport services provided to the population.
Arab Trade Union Confederation Statement:
The Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) expresses its full solidarity with the striking urban transport workers in Oujda, and emphasizes the following:
• The strike is a legitimate response to worsening working conditions and repeated violations of labor rights.
• The local authorities and regulatory bodies must intervene immediately to ensure the company complies with legal and contractual obligations.
• A serious and inclusive social dialogue must be initiated with union representatives to reach fair and lasting solutions that uphold worker dignity and improve public transport services.
• The right to organize, access social protection, and decent working conditions must be safeguarded as core pillars of social justice and sustainable development.
