Egypt: The Minister of Public Business Sector's statements anger workers

The statements of the Minister of Public Business Sector, Hisham Tawfik, concerning the new wage regulations, have angered workers and their representatives in holding companies and trade unions.

During a seminar on business sustainability and achieving sustainable development goals, held last Wednesday at the Center for Economic and Financial Studies and Research at the Faculty of Economic and Political Sciences, Cairo University, the Minister explained that the new wage regulations will be based on the principle of equality in the distribution of wages and earnings and that '62% of the 209,000 workers and civil servants will benefit from these new regulations (in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Business Sector) while 38% will be impacted.

Trade union parties strongly opposed these statements and explained that any regulation made in consultation with workers' representatives and organizations can only be contrary to the Constitution and international conventions ratified by Egypt.
