Strikes and protests are still escalating in Sudan. The Sudanese capital, Khartoum, witnessed on January 29 workers protesting in the health sector and universities, to demand improvement in salaries and working environment.

Strikes and protests have prevailed in many sectors in Sudan for nearly three continuous months, in light of the deteriorating general conditions in the country. Perhaps one of the most important strikes launched recently was the strike of the employees of the Tax Office to demand an increase in salaries and the improvement of their working conditions.

The Sudanese Teachers Committee decided to close all schools in all governorates of the country throughout the month of December, as part of the strike launched by teachers to pressure for a salary increase. Thousands of teachers entered a strike with at the beginning of December in 18 governorates.

The head of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, decided to freeze the activity of trade unions, syndicates, and the Sudanese Businessmen and Employers Federation, in a statement issued on November 28.

Railway workers in the city of Atbara, Nile State, lifted their strike on 19 November after four days of protest calling for a wage revision and payment of some grants. The workers had also objected to the company’s proposal to calculate increases on the basis of the company’s income.
