International and Regional Trade Union Institutions
(Arab Trade Union Confederation Educational Platform)
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to present this lesson on the Arab Trade Union Confederation’s educational platform, which addresses a key topic for understanding our trade union movement’s position within the global and regional landscape: International and Regional Trade Union Institutions.
In a world marked by accelerating economic globalization and the expansion of multinational corporations, international trade union alliances have become a strategic necessity to strengthen solidarity, defend social rights, and confront unjust economic policies.
Through this lesson, we aim to:
• Introduce the most prominent international trade union institutions, including:
• The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)
• Global Union Federations (GUFs)
• Understand the role these institutions play in influencing global policy, advocating for workers’ rights, and engaging with international bodies such as the International Labour Organization (ILO).
• Get to know key regional trade union organizations, including:
• The Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC)
• The African Regional Organization of the ITUC (ITUC-Africa)
• The Asia-Pacific Regional Organization of the ITUC (ITUC-Asia Pacific)
• Explore areas of joint action, regional coordination mechanisms, and the importance of trade union solidarity.
The lesson includes simplified explanations, interactive maps, and reference materials that help learners understand the structure of the global and regional trade union landscape, and the role of Arab unions within it.
Understanding these institutions is a crucial step toward building an effective Arab trade union movement, one that is dynamically connected to the global labor movement, in defense of social justice, economic rights, and dignity at work.
