UGTT Rejects Cancellation of Conciliation Sessions and Warns Against Violations of Labor Laws

Tunis – 4 August 2025

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), in a statement issued by its Executive Bureau following an extraordinary meeting at the Union’s headquarters, expressed its firm rejection of what it described as a “unilateral decision” to cancel conciliation sessions related to several strikes in the transport and agriculture sectors.

The union explained that the Labour Disputes and Promotion of Professional Relations Directorate at the Ministry of Social Affairs had cancelled sessions scheduled for 4 and 5 August, which concerned strikes in the pipeline transport sector, the National Intercity Transport Company, Transtu (Tunis Transport Company), as well as the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The statement stressed that this decision lacks any legal justification and constitutes a clear violation of Article 378 of the Labour Code, which requires the Ministry of Social Affairs to hold conciliation sessions immediately upon the issuance of strike notices.

The UGTT held the government and the Ministry of Social Affairs fully responsible for any consequences resulting from what it described as a “blatant breach of labor legislation,” calling for respect of national laws and international conventions related to social dialogue and trade union rights.

The union also reaffirmed its adoption and support of all legal and legitimate actions undertaken by workers across various sectors in defense of their material and moral rights, reiterating its readiness to confront any attempt to undermine the Constitution, ratified international conventions, or the law governing the work of the National Council for Social Dialogue.
