Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese workers continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing economic crisis, which began in 2019 and is considered one of the worst economic collapses in the country’s modern history. This crisis has plunged workers into dire living conditions and harsh, unjust working environments.
The report highlights that workers have suffered major losses in the value of their wages due to the collapse of the Lebanese pound, resulting in soaring poverty and unemployment rates, as well as a steep decline in living standards. It also notes that workers have been stripped of their most basic social and economic rights, including access to health and social security, further deepening their hardship.
Lebanese workers report that they are forced to work under extremely harsh conditions and for long hours, receiving wages that are barely enough to cover their families’ basic needs. The absence of government oversight and the declining role of official institutions in protecting labor rights have worsened their situation and left them vulnerable to exploitation.
In this context, the Arab Trade Union Confederation calls on all relevant stakeholders in Lebanon to take urgent action to provide social protection for workers, ensure the enforcement of labor laws that safeguard their rights, and implement immediate measures to alleviate the economic burden on workers and their families.
