Tunisia: Indignation after the arrest of a trade unionist

The secretary-general of the Highways Syndicate was arrested following a complaint lodged by the administration of the company Tunisie Autoroute for damage caused to the company. The syndicate, for its part, contested this arrest, denouncing its repressive aspect which infringes on trade union rights, and particularly the right to strike.

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) also condemned the arrest, saying that the charges against him were unfounded. The trade union centre said that the workers’ strike had been postponed twice before it was called in order to support the rights of employees in the absence of any agreement.
