Gaza Declared a Famine-Stricken Area
The United Nations Food Security Authority has announced that all international criteria for declaring a famine are now met in the Gaza Strip. It added that this famine is man-made, pointing directly to the occupation, its blockade, and its war on the Strip as the causes of this catastrophe.
On this, Hind Benammar, Executive Secretary of the Arab Trade Union Confederation, stated:
“This is news that tastes of defeat and betrayal. Yes, we feel defeated as components that have held firmly — and still hold — to the highest humanitarian principles, striving tirelessly to save what could be saved in Gaza. And we feel betrayed by an international community that has become incapable of fulfilling its legal and moral obligations.”
Commenting on the reactions to the UN Food Security Authority’s declaration of famine in Gaza, she said:
“We must all realize that humanity is facing a fundamental problem, the source of all the disasters we endure. It is no longer acceptable that the world be ruled by the veto power. Democracy has reached every international arbitration institution except the Security Council. As long as international decision-making is hostage to the calculations of this structure, there will be no international peace and no true justice.”
On the future actions of Arab trade unions, she added:
“Anyone betting on fatigue or retreat in our support for just causes is gravely mistaken. We are unions born out of rejection of injustice and social oppression, and we will not stop supporting the people and workers of Palestine — and all oppressed peoples — until comprehensive and just peace is achieved. Our reliance on international legitimacy will not falter, and our condemnation of the occupier’s crimes will continue and take many forms.”
