Mahalla al-Kubra – 26 September 2025
Early this Friday morning, the city of Mahalla al-Kubra witnessed a tragic accident at the “Ghazl El-Bashbishi” laundry, following a boiler explosion caused by an electrical short circuit and negligence in applying occupational health and safety standards.
According to reports, the explosion, combined with a malfunctioning automatic fire suppression system, caused a partial collapse of the six-story building, resulting in 11 fatalities and several injuries buried under the debris.
The Arab Trade Union Confederation strongly condemns this incident, emphasizing that the protection of workers’ lives and occupational safety must be an absolute priority. The Confederation calls on the relevant authorities to:
• Hold directly responsible parties accountable for negligence.
• Activate regular and surprise inspections of industrial facilities, especially in high-risk areas.
• Review and update safety standards for boilers and heavy machinery, and ensure the operation of fire suppression and emergency systems in all facilities.
The Arab Trade Union Confederation stresses the need for strict enforcement of workplace safety and health standards and urges the Egyptian government to take firm measures to prevent the recurrence of such disasters.
