The Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CLTM) was established following the major crisis that struck the Mauritanian trade union movement in 1991, in the aftermath of a powerful workers’ strike.
Many trade union leaders faced severe repression and arrests as a result of that strike, among them Brother Samory Ould Beye, the current Secretary General and one of the founding members of the CLTM.
From its inception, the Confederation confronted intense pressure from the authorities. Nevertheless, through the steadfastness of its leadership, it succeeded in establishing a strong presence among workers across various sectors in Mauritania.
The Confederation has taken principled and courageous stands on the issue of slavery-related practices in the country. Thanks to its tireless advocacy, protective legislation has been enacted in support of those affected by this grave injustice.
